Marsala Lagoon Salt Pans
Between wellness and ancient tradition
Western Sicily offers unique landscapes, and one of these lies between Marsala and Trapani along the famous “Salt Road”, the gateway to the Stagnone Islands Nature Reserve. An extraordinary setting unfolds here: an ancient landscape of tradition that connects seamlessly with the present, renewing itself not only through culture but also through psychophysical well-being. The white expanses of the salt pans alternate with the blue-green hues of the Mediterranean, while windmills frame basins, channels, piles and mounds of salt in a surreal scenery. In the Marsala salt pans, time seems to stand still: salt drawn from the sea is still harvested by hand, following an age-old practice that remains a true spectacle.
History and Tradition of Salt
From the Phoenicians to the Present Day
Salt carries with it an entire culture: it is not just a food, but the result of an ancient history dating back to Phoenician times. In the past, the presence of windmills was essential to pump seawater into the evaporation ponds and extract the salt. The manual harvesting method has been passed down through generations, and the salt produced in the Ettore and Infersa salt pans is a high-quality product that holds IGP certification. This territory, in close contact with the sea, preserves millennia-old practices, where every gesture has remained unchanged over the centuries and every crystal tells a story of time and patience.

Salt Museum and artisanal tradition
The Levante Route leads to the Infersa Windmill, where you can enter the historic mill to explore the dedicated museum with a multimedia path on the history of salt production. Inside, you'll find the shop for IGP salt harvested from the Ettore and Infersa salt pans. This high-quality salt is the result of a manual harvesting method passed down through generations, preserving ancient techniques and the bond between humans and the sea.
